2009 IN REVIEW

As we hurtle inexorably toward the second decade of the 21st century a quick glance into the rear view mirror shows us that 2009 was very much a bitter sweet affair.

In January the world bore witness to the inauguration of the first US Black president and there was a real sense of optimism that Barack Obama would be a breath of fresh air after what many opined was a low point in US history under Bush.

There was much to do for the new president, with the world still in turmoil from the credit crunch. Collapsing stock values, huge unemployment and countries across the world suffering from seismic financial problems. Millions was replaced with Billions as debt and loss figures reached telephone number proportions. The phrases "too big to fail" and "quantitive easing" and "Madoffs Millions" became as prominent as fat cat bonuses. It seemed there was little humility shown by those that were to be bailed out as taxpayers bore the brunt of averting Global economic collapse. Some bonuses to be paid in the financial sectors of many countries at the end of THIS year could be some of the biggest ever paid. All this against a backdrop of a plummeting public opinion of financial institutions and rising unemployment.
In Science, stem cell research continued apace, with Chinese scientists suggesting that the female menopause can be delayed and British scientists suggesting that synthetic blood supplies can be "manufactured" all achieved through use of these cells.

The US crashed some serious hardware into the lunar surface, which garnished data that confirmed that there were "buckets" of water on the moon.

But dominant of all in the science arena was Climate Change. Heavy weight studies suggested that global warming was indeed happening faster than previously thought.
This raised the stakes for the climate summit in Copenhagen. Copenhagen was to be the point where at last global agreement as to how best to tackle climate Change and cast iron assurances as to implementation of carbon reduction were made. Well, they did manage to hash out some sort of deal at the eleventh hour and some of the biggest polluters were on board, but as of now none of the agreements are legally binding and until they are they remain impotent. But it is a start.
Twitter and Facebook provided the communication buzz of 2009 and Google continued its mission of global domination in pretty much everything with Chrome, Google Library, street view.
Bing was launched and Netbooks and the IPhone were the "must have" products of the year. Digital Books hit the mainstream with Kindle as Amazon continued its dominance in online retailing.

James Cameron's AVATAR was the most eagerly awaited Film title of the year with Slumdog Millionaire being arguably the film of the year. Other titles of note were Surrogate, The Wrestler. The Lemon of the year goes to the absurd disaster movie, 2012.

The homemade short "Ataque de Pánico! (Panic Attack!) 2009" which has to date received nearly 5 million hits on YouTube was perhaps the suprise hit of the year with it's creator Fede Alvarez earning a $30 million Hollywood contract to produce a new Science Fiction movie. Not a bad return for a five minute $300 YouTube video.

Michael Jackson's death at a mere 50, probably drew more column inches than any other individual but it was a year in which we lost many that will be sorely missed.

Just a few of the public figures we said farewell to:

Patrick McGoohan, 80

Actor from 1960s show The Prisoner

Natasha Richardson, 45

Film and stage actress

Michael Jackson, 50

Self-styled "King of Pop"

Farrah Fawcett, 62

Charlie's Angels actress and 1970s sex symbol

Karl Malden, 97

Oscar-winning actor for A Streetcar Named Desire

Walter Kronkite, 92

News Anchor

Harry Patch, 111

Last British soldier to fight in First World War trenches

Sir Bobby Robson, 76

Footballer and England manager

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, 78

Founder of the Special Olympics

Les Paul, 94

Songwriter, inventor and rock music pioneer

Edward Goldsmith, 80

Environmentalist and campaigner

Edward Kennedy, 77

Seven-term United States senator

Patrick Swayze, 57

Star of Dirty Dancing, Ghost and many other films

Stephen Gately, 33

Singer-songwriter in Irish boy band Boyzone

Jennifer Jones, 90

Oscar-winning actress and five-time Oscar nominee

Brittany Murphy, 32

American film actress and singer

David Carradine, 72

American film actor

Ricardo Montalban, 88

Hispanic actor

Kim Dae-jung, 85

South Korean President and Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Helen Suzman, 91

South African anti-apartheid activist

Mercedes Sosa, 74

Argentine folk singer, the "voice of Latin America"

2009 was the year of Swine Flu, the continued conflict in Afghanistan. It was also the year of Tiger Wood's fall from grace and Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize.

For most it was a year which was overshadowed by the Economic situation that the world had found itself in.

So as we leave the first decade of the 21st Century let us look hopefully toward a safer , more stable and equitable world in 2010 and beyond.

There is just something so magical about finding TRULY beautiful and creative places in Second Life. I was lucky enough to be introduced to such a place : Garden of Dreams. It's the perfect blend of beauty and majesty without being ostentatious or gaudy in its look and feel. Lots of places to just wander and explore, so DO take time to relax and soak up the atmosphere here.
Certainly a lovely place to take your honey for a bit of cuddling as they have these wonderful tree cages with lush comfy pillows and lots of cuddle poses. Holiday time can always be a bit hectic so I hope you take some time away...and dream a little dream!

OH THE PLACES WE GO!!!!

This particular location has long been known to produce superbly creative experiences and on this occasion they have once again excelled. Happymood demonstrates very well the creativity that is possible within Second life. The creators have certainly managed to create a compelling atmosphere, and this time, it's FESTIVE.
The moment you land, it is so easy to immerse yourself into the Christmas Atmos. Magical snow swirls and falls around you and slowly a winter wonderland will appear. Allow yourself a moment for everything to rezz, it will be well worth it. Once you get your bearings , you will see that there are three massive snow-globes that float in a star studded sky.
These globes I am quite sure will put you in a "happymood"(hey it's christmas). I will not go into too much detail about what is to be found here, suffice to say it is well worth the exploration. I hope you get as much delight from visiting Happymood as we did!

THANKSGIVING WISHES TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!!

People in the USA are celebrating thanksgiving today, and will be indulging in making merry with family and friends. We all at Tribe wish those celebrating a wonderful time with their friends and family.

For those unsure what Thanksgiving is.....

Here is the Wiki entry for Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. The Thanksgiving Day service is held annually at the Pieterskerk in Leiden. While perhaps religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.

The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention. The traditional "first Thanksgiving" is the celebration that occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The Plymouth celebration occurred early in the history of what would become one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States. The celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s. This Thanksgiving, modeled after celebrations that were commonplace in contemporary Europe, is generally regarded as America's first. Elementary school teacher Robyn Gioia has argued that the earliest attested "thanksgiving" celebration in what is now the United States was celebrated by the Spanish on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida.Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends.

This charitable endeavor has made Toys for Tots the unchallenged leader in looking after less fortunate children at Christmas. If you are a venue owner, a store owner, an entertainer or your just someone that wants to help with this fund raising effort and you think you can make a difference contact me and I can provide you with a low prim single object vendor. Your support is wanted and needed.

In closing let me say, because it should be said, that during the 60 days of producing this CD all the entertainers were professional and easy to work and play with. Their level of talent never ceases to amaze me. I am very proud of their efforts and want to thank them for letting me be a small part of the Second Life music community.

Merry Christmas!!!

Sincerely,

Pat Wunderland

WORLD BUILDER is a superb short film about a strange man who builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves.

This award winning short was created by filmmaker Bruce Branit, widely known as the co-creator of '405'. World Builder was shot in a single day followed by about 2 years of post production. Branit is the owner of Branit VFX based in Kansas City.

The Machinima of Lyric Lundquist

A
New World Notes post brought
this SL Machinimatographer and her edgy work to my attention. Her work is without doubt some of the most intriguing and absorbing machinima that I have come across. Describing herself as a machinima maker/transitory art lover/dreamer (SL Profile), a description that certainly shows in her accomplished work. Not for everyone I know, but check it out.

OH THE PLACES WE GO!!!

It's nice to have friends but it's nicer to have friends that show you places that are cool and interesting to visit. I must give due credit to Blu Jupiter for finding this ever so lovely place! There seems to be something magical about winter wonderlands and especially for those of us who rarely if ever get to experience real ones. Winter at Never Never land is certainly no exception. If you want to just go and soak up the atmosphere you can relax by a cozy fire or if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, grab a pair of ice skaltes and take a spin around the pond. There 's even a sled if you are more into sharing the icy cold with someone . My personal favorite: a snowball maker!!! I have challenged both Drift and Blu to a snowball fight...we'll see which one of them has the NERVE!!!

For the romantic in you, grab your sweety and go for a whirl around the dance floor surrounded by glistening snow-covered trees and stars that twinkle in the night and then afterwards for a cuddle beside the fire. There a quaint little cabin with mistletoe JUST inside entrance where you can surprise someone special with a stolen kiss.

Hope you all enjoy Winter at Never Never Land...even the name promises something just a bit magical!!!

TRICK or TREAT?

I was out buying my annual Halloween candy today... and I always have such a hard time finding the PERFECT candies. After all, I want to be the most POPULAR candy giver in the neighborhood! It got me to thinking: how does everyone else around the world celebrate Halloween? It's HUGE here in the United States. I read a statistic that was staggering! Over 21 million dollars is spent on Halloween candy every year! Halloween is the holiday with the 3rd largest number of parties annually next to Christmas and New Year's Eve. So come on, enlighten me, how do YOU celebrate Halloween?

Philip Linden's BIG ADVENTURE!

The news rolled out late last night that Philip Linden is starting a new company!! Philip stated, " It's a big idea - something that actually depends on Second Life existing to get started, and that I have been thinking about almost as long as I've been thinking about Second Life. " So while we don't have the particulars, I am excited to see what this visionary has in store for us! He has a new island called 'P Squared' , which he sees as his extended space for his work place. Along with the new island comes an open invitation for anyone to visit. (CLICK HERE ) Keep your eyes on this spot and as we get the skinny on Philip Linden's new project, we will post it here!

I always find it interesting to see the real people behind Second Life being interviewed not only for the questions asked but the nuances of his body language. I can't decide who looks more uncomfortable, the interviewer or the interviewee!

PLAYBOY MAGAZINES NEW COVER GIRL!

Well, you know you have really made it as a sex symbol when you get to be on the cover of PLAYBOY magazine and none other than the infamous Marge Simpson has been chosen for this prestigious honor! PLAYBOY says they are looking to attract the 20-something crowd and I have to wonder, Marge Simpson??????? Nevertheless , she is as iconic as the IPOD Touch to 20- year olds but not half as user friendly. On second thought, it must be the blue hair that is the deal sealer!

YOKO ONO OPENS IMAGINE PEACE TOWER IN SECOND LIFE

"On Friday 9th October 2009, Yoko Ono was in Iceland (in the real world) for the annual lighting of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

Later the same evening, at 10.30pm (Reykjavik time), Yoko unveiled a new IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Second Life, an online virtual world."

Full Article Here

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER UNVEILING SPEECH
by Yoko Ono Lennon

All spirits of goodness of this magical land, of the planet, and of the universe,
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for witnessing our humble gathering
For the unveiling of IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

They say, if all the people in China were to jump up and down at the same time,
The axis of the globe would shift.

Well, we are here together. Billions of us.
Standing at the dawn of a new age determined to shift the axis of the world to health,
Peace and joy by loving and caring for all lives on Earth.

Some of us are here physically, some are joining us in spirit.
Some of us are imprisoned, tortured, maimed and silenced, but they are also here today with us.
Some of us have passed away before being able to enjoy a new age of love and peace.

But we are all here today standing together with hope.

The light is the light of wisdom, healing and empowerment.

Even in the moments of confusion, fear and the darkness of your souls,
Hold the light in your hearts,
And you will know that you are not alone,
That we are all together in seeing the light of peace.

I thank the people of Second Life, for giving so much love to this tower from its inception.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER was visualized with love, and realized by love.
It is a gift from John and Yoko and the people of Second Life to the world.
I know that John is with us, too, in this land of Nutopia,
happy that the light tower is finally a reality after 40 years.

Let’s make a wish as the light goes on.
Let’s send light to each other and say I love you!

i ii iii

John, we love you!

Seond Life & Social Networks

Last week Twitter was given the hefty valuation of $1billion and this before it has become profitable. The social networking site boasts a huge audience and although Twitter won't release official numbers, its website has over 30 million unique monthly users, plus more on its mobile and smart phone services.

The buzz is all about Social Networks, and for good reason? Social networks apart from providing huge numbers of eyeballs on webpages also sort people into groups of
common interests in hobbies, religion, politics, buying trends etc etc. This is a marketeers dream and is highly valued in dollar terms if it can be tapped.

Second Life, which incidently is in profit, needs to access this phenomenon and some form of integration into the SL client and/or website is called for.

With the Lab currently working on a new client and with the introduction of the new secondlife.com it must be hoped that Linden Labs have their sights firmly fixed on Social Networking Integration (SNI). If it is the case that LL are working hard along these lines then, if successful, a very bright future is in prospect for the Lab and Second Life.

The Places We Will Go!!!

When I first came into Second Life a friend suggested I go visit the "Lost Gardens of Apollo" to get a feel for the potential of SL.
Well I was not disappointed then and I was not disappointed again today when I popped over to remind myself of those early days of stubmbling around (I was sober).

The Lost Gardens are a delicious mix of Classical history and romantic bliss. Towers reach for the Gods and below imposing column walkways.

If I may suggest, a tour on foot is your best bet to really get the feel for the sim. Then a fly around to see the splendid views.

And if it is guys looking for brownie points....take your gal ;)

Secret Second Life

A very interesting and thought provoking movie. Looking at the effect of Second Life on a Real Life relationship from one perspective.
The movie features real actors as well as avatars and it raises questions about fidelity and addiction in a virtual world, in this case Second Life.
What constitutes addiction, what constitutes infidelity?

OH THE PLACES WE GO!!!!!

Mont-St Michel is a small rocky island about 1km from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River in Normandy.

The mount is best known for the medieval Benedictine Abbey and steepled church that occupies most of the 1 km diameter clump of rocks jutting out of the waters of the English Channel.

Now, it has been faithfully reproduced in Second Life by Moeka Kohime on the sims Edelweiss and Mont Saint Michel.

It is a stunning piece of work and well worth a visit. Having been to the Real version years ago, I can only say that the SL version brought many memories flooding back at every turn. The build has an "atmosphere" all of its own from the grand church atop the Mont to the shops in the narrow walkways.

So if you want a taste of Northern France and European History take a limo over to see a very impressive addition to Second Life.

ADULT CONTENT: What is it?

There seems to be a bit of confusion about ADULT CONTENT (AC) here in Second Life. Here at Tribe we have always adopted an 'live and let live' policy : To each their own and what you do in the privacy of your own home is exclusively YOUR business as long as it is within TOS and covenant, of course. Basically, as defined by the Knowledge Base on the SL website, AC means:

"The Adult designation applies to Second Life® Regions that host conduct or display content that is sexually explicit or intensely violent, or depicts illicit drug use. Any Region must be designated Adult and therefore require account verification, if it advertises or publicly promotes the following:
Representations of intensely violent acts, whether or not photo-realistic (for example, depicting death, torture, dismemberment or other severe bodily harm)
Photo-realistic nudity; photo-realistic means that an image either is or cannot be distinguished from a photograph
Expressly sexually themed content, spaces or activities (whether or not photo-realistic); we will broadly define what is "sexually themed" to include any sexually oriented activities and conduct. "

Now the above qualifiers apply to events , groups , regions and even classifieds. What the above qualifiers do NOT apply to is what you do in the privacy of your own home!! You do NOT need to be in an AC region to have a sex bed, have sexually explicit poseballs, or even to have marijuana plants on your property. The key to ALL of this is the following phrase: if it advertises or publicly promotes . The bottom line ( no pun intended) is that the ADULT CONTENT policy has brought NO changes to what you can and can not do at TRIBE ISLANDS. So...Just have you have always done from day one...relax, have fun and ENJOY!!!

Tribe Thriller Update

As you are all aware we filmed the Tribe Thriller last week and I was due to publish the resultant movie here and on youtube sometime between then and now. However on Tuesday my Mac for the second time decided to have a melt down. The hard drive begun to stick and after several attempts to resuccitate the damn thing I had to concede defeat. Now it is with a London based Apple specialist for a warranty repair. I am hoping upon hope that the data will be recovered, but according to them the recovery costs may be prohibitive if it is at all possible. So we may be staring defeat in the face on this one and we may have to shoot again!! Hopefully that will not be too much of a strain as the original shoot with Tribe and Noma fans was extremely good fun. Anyway I am due to get the prognosis on Monday 21st Sept and will post it here. If the worst case scenario is realised we will have to engineer a re-shoot!
Please accept my apologies for this , I have learned the very valuable lesson of Backing Up!!!

Unwritten Blue Mars

A lot of people are talking about Blue Mars and as this virtual world has just gone to Open Beta it is hardly surprising. There is talk that it is a Second Life killer and that it is THE virtual platform where real world commerce can find viability. Well, as it stands, it is neither. As you wander around this visually stunning world you quickly realise how sterile it all is. Yes the visuals are gorgeous and even the avatars are not bad (albeit with spooky stares) but when it comes to being able to actually do something you quickly realise that all that glitters is not gold.

However Avatar Reality, the company behind this project are keen to stress that this is a world for the developer and that it is their world to create and that Avatar Reality are purely there to facilitate. The question is how quickly are the dev's going to be able to make this world something that has more attraction than simply it's graphics.

Content creation relies on higher skill sets than are required in Second Life, with proficiency in, high end 3d Modelling and animation software like Maya, 3DSMax also knowledge of LUA is needed for those wishing to script. But given the massive amount of 3d content already out there (just check out renderosity.com and turbosquid.com) I am sure that there are Dev's who will see Blue Mars as a major opportunity.

For Blue Mars to be successful it will quickly have to add substance to the backdrop. I would thoroughly encourage people to visit www.bluemarsonline.com and download the client (when available, any day now)and have a wander, it is worth it for the scenery alone. Time will tell whether Blue Mars is able to fulfill it's true potential.

At the moment I see it as more of an acquired taste than something everyone wants to gorge on.

New Look secondlife.com

As was previewed at this years SLCC in San Francisco, Linden Lab have rolled out their new look website for all to gaze upon and wonder and ponder.
Certainly the change has caused a stir from people threatening to leave the platform entirely in protest at the greenyness of it all and to those wanting to partner the designers. The forums are full of comments , and as one would expect the spectrum of views is vast.
For me, I think it needed to be freshened up but it also needed to be better accesible to new users, thus encouraging browsers to grab the client download and jump into the world of Second Life. Well fresh it certainly is, but for the latter I am not so sure. It is too clunky for me and for sure needs tweeking. With all the fancy pop up menus, and picture links etc it has all become a bit too fussy. New users and me for that matter prefer simplicity.
Anyway what do you think....love or hate...or is there a THIRD way?

OHHHHH....the Places you GO!!!!

Sunday…Monday…Happy Days!!! Tuesday…Wednesday…Happy Days! Who remembers THAT theme song? If you are longing for a retro 'fix' and a taste of the fifties, when the air was clean and getting frisky meant kissing at the Drive-In, here’s a fun place for you to go to in Second Life.

From a roller rink to a highly detailed, vintage Diner car to the cool Drive-In move theater, there’s lots to see and do at DecoRetropia. Need s new leather jacket a la James Dean? DECORETROPIA has stores with vintage clothing and ooo laa laa.... a Burlesque Club! Seeing as I have never been to a REAL Drive in movie, I thought I would give the one at Decoretropia a whirl. They were showing vintage YouTube videos and from what I gather, they will be showing full length retro movies in the near future. (See what I did there…talking about the ‘future’ in blog post about a RETRO sim? ) I also took a spin around the roller rink, which was actually quite fun. They have skates for sale, starting at just 75 L$ and the skates are scripted to do tricks! So put on your poodle skirt, get your hair slicked back and go enjoy an evening out…in 50’s style!
